Yuqi Liao

Senior Researcher

Yuqi Liao is a senior researcher at AIR. In this capacity, Liao provides support on several large-scale international studies, including the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

He leads and assists with the development, production, and dissemination of high-quality, timely, and reliable statistical analyses, reports, and data products. Liao’s responsibilities also include managing and coordinating updates to web pages and the International Data Explorer (IDE), a web-based tool for analyzing data from large-scale international studies; contributing to the development to EdSurvey – an R package for analyzing education surveys and assessments data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES); developing presentations for professional audiences and conducting trainings to the IDE and EdSurvey tools; and providing support to the NCES Assessment Division on the outreach and communication front.

Liao specializes in communicating research results through interactive R Shiny applications and static, animated, or interactive data visualizations backed by R or D3.JS.With strong technical skills, he also uses both machine-learning and econometrics methods to predict student outcomes and analyze heterogeneous treatment effects based on data from the Conditions for Learning survey. Liao champions building collaborative working environment by co-organizing initiatives that fosters knowledge sharing at the workplace, including the R learning group.

Previously, Liao was a research assistant at the Center for Research on Children in the United States, and a research intern at the Brookings Institution.
